For many landscapers, planning the layout of the plantings in parks, verges, green strips and other locations is one of their most important activities. The role of flower bulbs is not always included in this planning – even though it’s so simple! (more)

Locations

In choosing locations for landscaping, we often have to take many different factors into consideration: traffic situations, the public nature of the green space, the expectations of residents and visitors, and, of course, the landscaping budgets. (more)

soil types

The soil is the basis for the growth of plants. Soil consists of solid particles that hold air and water between them. These solid particles can differ widely in size. The type of soil, its structure and its nutrients play a major role in the vitality displayed by flower bulbs and other plants. Although most plants and flower bulbs can grow anywhere, they will grow better in one type of soil than in another. The type of soil and its particular characteristics are important points of departure for drawing up a planting plan. (more)

Site Conditions

Every plant or flower bulb has its own preferences when it comes to habitat. For flower bulbs, the conditions that follow flowering and continue on into the summer are just as important as the conditions during the flowering period itself. This is because the plant is generating new bulbs beneath the ground immediately after the flowering period. (more)

Choosing the Right Bulbs

First, determine what kind of look the planting will have to have and whether the bulbs will be used for one-year flowering, multiple-year flowering or for naturalizing. (more)

Bulbs per Square Meter Yard

The number of flower bulbs per square meter depends very much on the kind of planting you have in mind. The following chart provides average quantities for some of the main products that could be planted for certain kinds of planting. (more)

Now that the choices of location and products have been made, the quantities per square meter/yard can be used to prepare an order list. The flower bulb supplier would prefer receiving this order list in the spring. This might seem early, but these companies start their purchasing as soon as the bulb fields are in flower. (more)

Upon Receipt

Flower bulbs supplied for use in gardens and parks are ready to plant as soon as they arrive. If not planted immediately, they will have to be placed in a space that is cool, dry, dark and properly ventilated for temporary storage. (more)
